Keeping Your Blooms Happy & Healthy

Hey there, flower lovers! We at Flower Delivery San Francisco by Rossi & Rovetti want to make sure your gorgeous blooms stay as fresh and vibrant as the day they arrived. Here are some tips to keep your flowers looking their best.

The short version

  • Keep them coolNo direct sun, no heat
  • Fresh water dailyEvery day for the first 2–4 days
  • Tidy & recutSpent petals out, stems trimmed

Everyday care

01

Keep ’em cool

Your flowers are like vampires — they hate direct sunlight and heat sources. Keep them away from sunny windows, TVs, and any other hot spots.

02

Pets are cute, but…

Keep arrangements out of reach of your furry friends. Their bacteria-laden mouths can bring on an early expiration date for your blooms, and some flowers can upset a pet’s belly if eaten — lilies are especially dangerous for cats. Sending to a home with pets? Browse our cat-safe and dog-safe flowers.

03

Change that water

Fresh water is key! Change it every day for the first 2–4 days, then as needed after that.

Bacteria grows in the water naturally around cut stems as they slowly decay. Keeping the water fresh cuts down on that bacteria — and on an early goodbye for your flowers.

04

Clean house

Every 3–4 days, give your vase a thorough cleaning with mild dish soap.

Let your blooms chill in a temporary home with water while you clean the vase, and recut the stems before putting them back in with fresh water.

Pluck the old

As soon as you see dead petals or leaves, remove them. They’re bacteria magnets!

Rescue tricks

When a bloom needs a little help

A few pennies, and the tulips straighten right up.
06

Droopy head? No problem!

If your roses start drooping:

  1. Change the water and move them to a cooler spot.
  2. Sometimes an air bubble works its way up to the head of a rose and makes it droop. Use a sewing pin or a straightened paperclip to poke a hole straight through the swollen top of the stem, just below the petals.
  3. Give it a few hours to release the air, and your rose will stand back up straight! Pluck any petals that look ready to fall.
07

Penny for your thoughts (and flowers)

Drop a penny in the vase to help keep bacteria at bay — the copper makes it an unfriendly place for those pesky microbes. And if your tulips are curving down, a few pennies in the vase will help them stand tall.

08

Orchids are divas

Orchids love conversation — proven fact.

  • WaterMist with a spray bottle and keep the soil semi-moist. Over-watering causes root rot and will kill an orchid quicker than anything else.
  • LightBright, indirect light — a spot where it can hang out without sitting directly in the path of the sun.
  • CompanyNot comfortable talking to your orchid? Place it somewhere it can listen in on the conversations around you.

With proper care, they’ll stick around indefinitely!

Remember, your flowers are living things with their own personalities. Keep an eye out for signs of distress and adjust accordingly. If you ever have questions or concerns, give us a call — we’re always happy to help keep your blooms looking their best.
